Never before have I been so excited to be a part of a team. This week alone, WE have executed 17 weekend services, led worship for hundreds of worship leaders, called pastors and men’s ministry leaders to action, all the while setting up, programming, and planning for the Vertical Church Band’s second recording in just a few days.

I look at this list and and am so amazed how the Lord has blessed our ministry. It’s incredible to see that blessing manifest in how the Lord has orchestrated the right group of people to work together, all talented in different ways, working towards the same goal. I look at this list and the members of our team, there’s a lot of high-capacity people on board but- not one of us could come remotely close to accomplishing even one of these things without the others.

So, as the team is scattered about, ready to reassemble back home in the next 24 hours, I can trust that while I was (Lord willing) maximizing the talents the Lord’s blessed me with, the rest of our team has been as well, reaching farther, running harder, and accomplishing greater things for HIs Kingdom… together.

Happy Mothers Day to all you Mom’s (or the Brits would say Mums!) out there.
Fantastic weekend at Harvest. We did open mic scripture – which is awesome to hear people lift up the word of the Lord to encourage one another and affirm our belief that God is who He says He is! Amen!
Here’s what we did…

1. Our God Saves
- open mic set up
2. 10,000 Reasons
- open mic reading
3. Call on the name (new VCB song)
4a. Worthy, Worthy (new VCB song)
- scripture reading:

Revelation 5:6-13
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
4b. Worthy, Worthy (ch, ch)

special: The Rock won’t move (new VCB song)

We’ve been teaching so many new songs in the build up to the new recording. Pray for us this week would you?
We record on Friday night!

see you next weekend.
cheers,

Well, the second record is all but upon us and it has been a true joy to watch our team unite in its various capacities to make this thing happen. So much work has gone into putting together the best project possible. Writing, praying, reading, editing, reediting, not to mention a boat load of planning and dreaming. Now it is nearly time to hit the record button.

So, with the recording looming overhead only a week away, will you join with us in this prayer as you read:

Father, You have been so good to our church and our team. You have poured out blessing upon blessing into our lives, and you alone have provided the creative inspiration and stamina, the vision, and the means to make this project a reality. These songs exist because of you and they are for your glory. We ask expectantly that you take our efforts like you took the five loaves and two fish, and multiply them far above our ability and beyond our dreams. Lord, you have told us in Proverbs 27:21 that “a man is tested by his praise”, and we ask that by your Spirit we might pass this test. That you would make us exceedingly hungry for this project to glorify the beautiful name of Jesus Christ high above the name of our band or our church. It is our desire to obey your command to Peter that he should “feed your sheep”. So we ask that you might let your beloved flock, your Church be nourished, blessed, and strengthened by these songs written for you and to you. We will bow our hearts and our heads and give you thanks for all these things, and delight in knowing that You, our Almighty God have been lifted high in our efforts.

In Jesus Name,
Amen

I am blessed to be able to be apart of an amazing production team here at Harvest Bible Chapel. My main job is to mix the audio for our weekend services. There is a lot that goes into this job and a lot of different aspects that I truly enjoy about it.

While for sure it is good to do the best that you can to make the sound pleasing to the audience when mixing in a church setting you have to come into it with a different mind set. You want to do the best that you can without taking the attention off of what people are there to truly do, worship our Savior. One of the guys on production team said it very well; the best referees are the ones that you never notice throughout the game. The same goes for production, you don’t want the center of the focus to be on the production because then everyone would be missing out on what God has for him or her. If you go into it with this mind set it will really start you off on the right foot.

Working with the different audio volunteers is one of my favorite parts of the job. I work every week to manage all of the scheduling of these volunteers and make sure that we are not burning anyone out. The joy comes when you invest the time to train them and over time you see them grow and improve on different skill sets. Nothing brings me more joy then to see the smiles on their faces when they start to understand concepts and gear. One fatal mistake that people make is not spending much-needed time with volunteers, to get them to the places were they need to be to succeed. The truth is, is that you can’t afford not to. It will always be more than worth it.

Being an audio guy for our main campus, I get to work with a lot of different worship leaders. It is important to build that trust with each of the worship leaders so that they know when they show up at 2PM on Saturday that everything is set and ready to go for sound check. Nothing is worse than having the band have to wait for you while you figure out an issue because you were not prepared and didn’t do the essentials before hand. You need to have the mindset that your serving the band and trying to make their experience as distract free as possible. That way they can purely focus on the music and leading the congregation in worship.

When it comes to mixing there are some very important principles that I like to follow. Most importantly you want to strive for clarity throughout the mix. You want to have a nice full mix without it having to push the level of the mix. If people can’t hear what the worship leader is singing then you have failed. The words are the most important part of the songs so you need to make sure without a doubt that people can sing along. You always want to have the melody above the harmony. A lot of times that means adjust the volume between verses and chorus’. Which gets me to my last point which is you need to be an active mixer. This is where I view mixing as much as an artistic ability than a tech ability. Throughout the songs I am constantly following the songs to feature and portray different parts of the songs. Nothing is worse than a sound guy who gets his mix set and then never touches it again. You need to bring the mix to life and you can only do that by actively mixing.

We are truly blessed to be able to serve in the church with the gifts that God gave us. So make sure that you use them to the best of your abilities.

-Adam Skidmore
Audio Engineer, Harvest Bible Chapel

“There are people who preach what they call “positive thinking,” and the idea is that you refuse negative thoughts, you cut them out. You must always be positive and always try to think beautifully as well as positively, and then you will feel better. And that is regarded as the worship of God – moral uplift.

Now these ideas are tremendously popular today, and they are regarded as truly Christian. But the great question that arises is this: are people who take them up doing anything other than giving themselves a psychological boost? Of course, psychological treatment can make you feel better, and it is foolish to say it cannot.

But the vital question is, what are you concerned about – feeling better or coming into the presence of God? Psychological treatment masquerading as worship of the living God is not worship “in spirit and in truth.”

Many people in our congregation probably wonder why I am talking into a microphone on stage during worship. This is especially noticeable when I’m on camera and you see me talk but don’t hear anything out in the house. Well I’m going to let you in on a not-so-secret secret. I’m actually talking to that band in their IEM (In-ear monitors) giving cues throughout the set. There’s no set rules to what you can or can’t do with this, but here are a few things I do with it.

1. Song Arrangement Cues

Sometimes with have a track in our in-ears counting in each section of the song. ie. “Chorus, 2, 3, 4″. But when we don’t, I’ll call these cues out live each service. If you ended up switching a couple arrangements in rehearsal, this is a huge help for your band to feel confident on the order of the song.

2. Song Ending Cues

As crazy as this might sound to some people, we don’t always end a song on the 1 chord. If we are planning on transitioning straight into a soft song, many times we will end on the 4 chord. Nothing is worse that making it through a song flawlessly only to have the band end on two different chords.

3. Audibles

This will very a bunch from church to church, but occasionally we will have to switch something up at the last second. Having a mic to talk to the band let’s me make a decision and communicate it to the band. There are times I can sense my worship leader wanting us to extend an ending or bring it down. I don’t always get this one exactly right, but at the very least it keeps us all together as a band.
