Service Review: February 2-3, 2013

Hey everyone,

Looking back on this weekend we’re so thankful for the way’s the Lord moved in our church. We had a few special elements that were pretty powerful:

Baptisms: nothing’s more powerful than hearing someone testify of the transformed life they have in Christ. We work hard to help people (especially those who aren’t used to speaking in public) get through an abbreviated testimony — following the simple model: “I was… but God… and NOW…”. It may seem extraneous, but our pastors in the tank go through lots of training and prep to help these flow smoothly. It’s very important to us that each person’s story of life-change in Christ reaches the listener without distraction. Having some go-to questions, practicing helping someone along who freezes, gently correcting a new believer who may not have said something quite right, and always asking the question “Why do you want to be baptized today?”… they should have been discipled enough in this process to know that this is an act of obedience and a public, willful declaration of their faith in Jesus Christ. Wow… when all this comes together – it brings a powerful celebration of the God who rescues sinners.

Call to Worship: we try to change it up often. Our Call to Worship is an opportunity to get people into a place where they’re focused — ready to tune out the chaos of the week, the screaming baby they just dropped off in the nursery, the crowded parking lot they just came from, etc. Some Calls to Worship are designed to ignite celebration, some designed to quiet our hearts, some to teach a Biblical principle of worship, some to draw people into a lyric we’re about ready to sing. We don’t want any worship song to be a “throw-away”, so we do our best to get people “ascending the hill of the Lord” with us as early in the service as possible.

1. Call to Worship

Worship Leader #1:
We’re here today to worship a God who never fails us
Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Worship Leader #2
We’re here today to worship a God whose promises are true
Romans 15:8-9 –  For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.”

Worship Leader #3
We’re here today to worship a God who is unchanging and steadfast
Deuteronomy 7:9 — Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations…

2. Unchanging (Raise Up Holy Hands)
3. I Believe in You (VCB Song)
4. I Believe in Jesus (Chorus Only, stripped down)

– Baptisms –

5. I Believe in Jesus (reprise)
6. Unspeakable Joy (New VCB Song)
7. Jesus, You are Worthy
8. Worthy is the Lamb (Chorus Only)

Our hearts are full as we reflect on all that God has done, the transformed lives witnessed in baptism, pointing people to Jesus Christ through music and striving to look more like Jesus Christ through studying His Word. Blessings to you as you plan for this weekend’s services. May all your efforts lead your people towards the adoration of God’s son.
